Do you like being frustrated hitting a little white ball that doesn't move? Swinging out of your shoes only to have 20 of your $3 personalized golf balls fly into the woods, never to be found again?.... Sorry, still in the business. VR Station 24 Tour 31. How about missing a 2 foot putt on the 18th hole while 40 other firefighters watch you do it.. and laugh? If this describes you, then we have a club for you!
The SFFD Golf Club starts up again on March 22nd at Silverado Golf Course in Napa. We have 9 scheduled tournaments from March 22nd- November 2nd. For some of you who don't know about our club or think you need to be a great, or even a good golfer to join, you don't. We have players of all abilities that shoot in the low 70's and well over 100. Really, well over 100 with smiles on their faces while doing it. There are 2 flights, A and B, that break the club in half at the beginning of the year. You stay in that flight for the remainder of the year.
A point system is used to determine the overall winner of the club at the end of the season by earning points for showing up and also for finishing in the top 3 at a tournament based on your handicap. Money is awarded at the end of the season to the top 4 point getters and the yearly dues are paid for players 5-10. We also have a skins game and closest to the pin at every event which pays out cash. Before I write anymore, I'd like to say thank you to John McNulty and Darryl Loo who have run the club for over 15 years. If you don't know who they are, they've been at Station 17 since they got off probation in the early 90's and unless you were a probie there or got detailed out to Fort Shafter, you wouldn't have had the chance to meet them. John and Darryl have done a great job setting up the golf calendar over the years with overnight trips to Monterey in May and Reno in September. Trying to do what they have done for so many years, I've realized it's not as easy as they make it look. Thanks again John and Darryl and have a great retirement and we'll see you on the links!
The SFFD Golf Club is a lot of fun and we'd love for more golfers or hackers to join and support the club. It's a way to hang with classmates, guys from your house or other houses and get to meet some of our legendary and not so legendary retired firefighters. If you have a foursome already, great. If you have a threesome, twosome or if you're a single, we'll find a group for you.
Please join by emailing us at sffdgolfclub.com. The schedule will be up on our website and tournaments can be paid for through a transfer from the SFFCU. Please feel free to contact the golf committee anytime with questions.
