Jim died in his wifes arms at home in Guerneville on Monday, March 12, 2001. Jim entered Heaven after a long and courageous battle with chronic lung disease and heart failure. Jim survived cancer in 1992 and had been in remission. His death was sudden, but not unexpected. He entered hospice care recently due to end-stage pulmonary disease. He was 58 years old.
A native of San Francisco, Jim served in the Air Force for four years, and in 1966 began his 31+ year career with the San Francisco Fire Department. Jim loved his work as a firefighter and chiefs aide, and was a respected and beloved member of San Francisco Firefighters Local 798. He was decorated three times for bravery and valor above and beyond the call of duty, and he worked in firehouses all over the City, most recently at Stations 38 and 5. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed reading and doing the daily crossword puzzle - in ink. Jims children, Christian Fex and his wife Julia, of San Mateo, and Carla Fex, of Austin, Texas, were a great source of joy and happiness in his life, and he loved them dearly. He was looking forward with excitement to the birth of his first grandchild. He was a tender, loyal and loving husband to his wife, Maggie Scandurra Fex, with whom he had a relationship of love and companionship spanning 19 years. Jim and Maggie were married in Maui in 1991, and Hawaii remained a special place for them, filled with fond memories of wonderful vacations and good times. Jim is also survived by his sister, Carole Martinez, and her family, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and by his uncles, Robert, Donald, and Jerry Fex and their families. Jim will be remembered fondly by his brother firefighters as The Seed and missed by his many friends, neighbors and others whose lives he touched. Jim was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and had enjoyed almost twenty years of continuous sobriety. Friends are invited to attend the memorial services on Monday, March 19, 2001 at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church, 2555 17th Avenue, San Francisco, CA. Memorial contributions are welcomed in Jims memory to Sutter, VNA & Hospice, 1110 North Dutton Avenue, Santa Rosa, CA 95401. There will be an informal gathering hosted by family friends following the services and information and directions will be provided at the church. |
