This marks the tenth year that active and retired firefighters have gone to the North Coast to dive for abalone to benefit the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Union Local 798 sponsored Toy Program. This year, fourteen firefighters made the journey to the Stillwater Cove campground on the Sonoma Coast. Under the watchful eye of our leader Bill Bassett and Mother Nature, divers were provided with sunshine, food, a great campfire, and a reasonably calm ocean. Most divers were able to bag limits, all of with were donated to the luncheon. The only missing ingredient on this year’s outing was our perennial campfire sage Louie Grossman. No one can “stir the campfire pot” like Louie. Gallstones put him in the hospital for emergency surgery and now he is recuperating very nicely.

Finally, it is important to remember that the Toy Program could not exist without the support of Firefighters Union Local 798. Our sincerest thanks for your continued support of this important and worth while program.

The following names are those active and retired firefighters who recently participated in the abalone dive to benefit the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program: Clarence (Hank) Adams, Bob Moore, Bill Bassett, Jack Norton, Pete Batanadies, Jim Novello, Kevin Callanan, Dave Rege, Art Citron, Walt (Doc) Slocum, Jim Goodwin, Bill Touhey, Gary Montague, and Harry Vogel.
