Retirees To address the continued peskiness of Ret. B.C. Pete Sorensen, a list of recent retirees follows at the end of this report. The May 2003 issue included all SFFD retirees from December 2000 through May 2003. This issue includes retirees through the rest of 2003. Thanks again to Fire Commission Secretary Tania Bauer for her help. If any retiree was omitted by error, please leave me a message at the Union office. Toy Program Congratulations to Melissa Lerma and her staff for another successful Toy Program season. It was obvious that the staff and all volunteers worked very hard to keep up with the demand. Thanks to all the firehouses which each adopted the Toy Program for a day and fed all the volunteers. The Toy Program is monetarily self-sufficient. All expenses for the Program are paid through donations made to the Toy Program. Local 798 oversees the Program but does not contribute any money to it. The SFFD generously allows the use of old Station 30 for the Toy Program to store and distribute the toys to San Francisco children. Together, the management of the SFFD and the labor union combine to reach out to the San Francisco community and help the needy during the all-important holiday season. Congratulations!!! Surviving Families Fund December 2003 marked the 2nd anniversary of this fund. Its purpose is providing assistance to families of persons who have died while actively employed as firefighters... During the 2nd year we were able to assist families from the SFFD along with other families from Bay Area fire departments. In the most recent 12 months, the trustees provided funds to five families. These include the families of SFFD Firefighters Mindy Ohler and Ken Hoover. The other three were members of Bay Area departments: Dan Nightingale (killed in an auto accident while returning with his family from vacation); Robert Walsh (died from cancer); and Steven Rucker (died fighting a wildland fire in Southern California). Thanks to all the donations made to the fund and thanks to all the trustees of the fund. |
