Letter From The President
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are entering the final year of our contract. This contract we’re under expires June 30, 2007. You should have received a cost of living raise on your most recent paycheck. Forty other agencies within the City have MOUs that will expire this June. We will be monitoring the results of the negotiations for our future bargaining. I’m sure that there will be crucial points within these negotiations that will reflect our position and which we will keep you informed of everything at union meetings.

Again, all members and retirees are invited to join us at the annual St. Patrick’s Day March – that date is Sunday, March 12th. Posters will appear in your firehouse reflecting the date and meeting position. This is full dress for our members and we are inviting all our brothers and sisters and other local fire departments to march with us as well.

James Lee (Engine 3) is spearheading the 100th Anniversary celebration of the earthquake. This event will mark the bravery and actions of the firefighters in San Francisco on that tragic day. Everyone who wishes to volunteer (active and retired) is requested to contact James Lee. There will be a 3-day party at Pier 48; April 15, 16 and 17. Local 798 will be prominent in this venue. Additionally, we are looking into a parade on the day of the earthquake; April 18th. The parade will be through the middle of town at high Noon. Updates will be posted on firehouse bulletins. Some of our musically inclined firefighters have volunteered their bands already for these events.

Most of you should have received your packet from the CPF regarding the scenario of our departure from that organization. I personally felt that it was an attack on us and did not reflect truthful or accurate timelines and statements, nor was it truthful as to why 85% of us decided to withdraw. The CPF must have unlimited funds to put out a piece like that sent to every member at their home, and to all other state locals. It must be quite expensive knowing that attorneys must have gone over it line by line. That being said, Local 798 will always take the high road and keep an open door to the Executive Board of the CPF in regard to our future association with the CPF.

Fraternally,
John F. Hanley
President, Local 798
