Fire Olympics 2006
San Francisco Dominates Olympic Softball
By Steve Gonzales
The recently completed 2006 California Fireman’s Olympics saw two San Francisco teams dominate the softball competition. The SF RED team easily won the Division One (Open) title for the 3rd straight year, while the Division Four (39 and over) San Francisco team earned their gold medal with an undefeated week.

Special congratulations to Dwayne Curry (St. 7), Jim Fewell (St.48), Antonio Vernon (St 6), and Sean Bonetti (St 8) for winning gold medals in both divisions.

The 39 and over San Francisco team was clearly the dominant team in Division Four all week, winning all 9 of their games. San Francisco defeated the 2005 gold medal team, LA County ... 3 times, both LA City teams, Millbrae, Sacramento, and a hand-picked multi-department team from NorCal. Medic C. Faciani pitched well and recorded victories in a 119 games.

Special thanks to our 39 and over multi-sport team athletes … Ed Ghilardi (moto-cross gold medalist), Greg Zanders, Rick Aviles, Chet ‘dog’ Spirlin, Andre Brown, Kevin ‘all-in’ O’Sullivan, and Rich Brown for finding the time to compete.

Repeat medalists from firehouse champion Station 6 included Ernie Carrillo, Steve Cassidy, Dave ‘cow bell’ Russell, John Hanley, and Steve Gonzales. Ruben Montero (St. 5) and Bob Vigil (St. 7) were valuable additions to this year’s team, as was the return of Mr. Consistency Hondo DeAlba. A/Captain Ray Guzman rounded out this year’s gold medal team.

Next year’s Olympics in San Diego promises to bring more competition and laughs for both San Francisco gold medal teams. Mark you calendars ......... July 15 - 20, 2007.
